The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Business visibility means being seen. Being a reference means being chosen, recommended and cited.
  • A reference is recognized by three things: a clear message, proven expertise and a consistent reputation.
  • The StoryBrand method helps clarify your message: your customer is the hero, you are their guide.
  • Google and AI favor unique content, grounded in real experience.
  • Our StoryBrand redesigns changed the type of clients attracted, without inventing anything.
  • 40%more visibility possible in generative engines with cited sources and figuresPrinceton University, 2024

Business visibility is about being seen by your future customers. But being seen is no longer enough: you have to be chosen. A go-to business is one whose message is clear, whose expertise is proven and whose reputation is consistent everywhere. Google says it in its AI guide: the content that performs best brings a unique perspective, grounded in real experience, not yet another summary.

At Monsieur Click, this is a founding belief. The best businesses should also be the easiest to find. Visibility should reflect skill, not luck or ad budget. Here is how to go from a business that is simply visible to one that is the reference.

What is business visibility?

A business’s visibility is its ability to appear in front of its future customers: on Google, on Google Maps, in AI assistants, through word of mouth. It’s the first step, and an essential one.

Without visibility, nothing happens. It’s the starting point of all our work. A customer who doesn’t see you can’t choose you. But visibility alone has a limit. Being seen among ten competitors guarantees nothing. The customer compares, hesitates, then picks the one who inspires the most trust.

Be seen, then be chosen

So there are two steps. First, show up. Then, convince. Many businesses work on the first and forget the second. They invest in being seen, then lose the customer on a vague home page. It’s like paying for a prime shelf spot for a product with no label. The customer sees it, picks it up, then puts it back, because they don’t understand what it’s for.

Why is being visible no longer enough?

Being visible is no longer enough because customers compare fewer and fewer options, and AI only cites a few names. Only the clearest, most credible businesses get through that filter.

Visitors decide very fast. The Nielsen Norman Group has shown that they often leave a page within 10 to 20 seconds. If your message isn’t clear in that short window, they leave. Even if you were the most skilled.

The AI filter

AI assistants add one more filter. When a customer asks “which osteopath should I choose near me?”, the AI doesn’t give ten links. It cites two or three names. To be on that short list, you must be understood and judged reliable. Perplexity even shows source labels to flag official or well-known websites. Reputation becomes visible. And a vague business, even a skilled one, has little chance of being on it.

What is a go-to business?

A go-to business is the one people recommend spontaneously in its field, because its message is clear, its expertise proven and its reputation consistent. It isn’t just seen. It is cited.

Think of the professional you would recommend to a friend without hesitation. You know what they do. You trust them. You have proof, because you’ve seen them work or others have told you about them. That’s exactly what a go-to business must produce online. The customer must feel the same trust, without knowing you, simply by reading your pages and your reviews.

The three pillars of a reference

  • a clear message people understand in a few seconds what you do, for whom, and why you
  • proven expertise your pages show your real work, your methods, your projects
  • a consistent reputation reviews, mentions and information match wherever people look for you.

How do you clarify your message with StoryBrand?

To clarify your message with StoryBrand, put your customer at the center of the story: they are the hero, and you are the guide who helps them succeed. Your website should tell their problem, your plan and their success.

The method was created by Donald Miller. Its official workbook sums it up in seven steps, inspired by the stories we all know. The first principle is simple: the customer is the hero, not your brand.

The seven steps of the story

  1. A character, your customer, wants something.
  2. They run into a problem.
  3. They meet a guide who understands them.
  4. That guide gives them a simple plan.
  5. The guide calls them to action.
  6. The guide helps them avoid failure.
  7. The story ends in success.

A before-and-after example

Take a fictional plumber. Before, his home page said: “Family business since 1998, we put our expertise at your service.” It’s friendly, but the customer still doesn’t know whether this plumber can help them tonight.

After, it says: “A leak, a broken water heater? We come out within 24 hours in Malakoff and Montrouge. Call us and we’ll give you a price before we come.” The customer’s problem is named. The area is clear. The plan fits in one sentence. The action is obvious.

Nothing was invented. The plumber already did all of this. He just didn’t say it.

Why it works

A customer-centered message answers their real question: “What are you going to change for me?” A company-centered message, like “We’ve been passionate since 1998”, answers nothing. StoryBrand forces you to talk about the customer’s problem, then show how you solve it. A three-step plan, in particular, reduces hesitation when it comes to contacting you. The customer knows what will happen. They know how many steps await them. They feel guided rather than sold to. That’s often what makes them call.

What we have seen with our clients

At Monsieur Click, we have applied StoryBrand to several redesigns. The most striking result isn’t a number. It’s the type of clients attracted.

Dharma Massage Therapy

Dharma Massage Therapy, in the United States, offered therapeutic massage. But its website simply said “massage”. It attracted spa clients. After a StoryBrand redesign and a repositioning toward medical massage, the result was summed up like this: “Now my website says ‘medical massage’ and attracts exactly the patients I’m trained to help.” The message changed the clientele. The services hadn’t changed. Only the way of describing them had. And that decided which clients knocked on the door.

Heather Fillmore Coaching

Heather Fillmore, a coach, had a website that didn’t tell her story. We rethought it around her clients’ transformation. The message we received is simple: “Now people instantly understand what I do and why it matters.” That’s the heart of a reference: being understood immediately. No slogans needed. What’s needed is clarity.

How do you prove your expertise online?

To prove your expertise, show your real work: projects, methods, precise answers to your customers’ questions, genuine reviews. One piece of proof is worth more than ten promises. A hesitant customer doesn’t want to read that you are serious. They want to see it.

Google favors helpful content that shows first-hand experience and real expertise. A page that explains how you work, with lived examples, checks those boxes. A generic text that could describe any competitor doesn’t.

The proof that counts

  • your projects photos, screenshots, precise descriptions of what you did
  • your reviews real, named, with your replies
  • your methods the steps of your work, explained simply
  • your answers to the questions your customers really ask you.

Reviews carry a lot of weight. According to BrightLocal, 41% of consumers always read reviews before choosing. We show our own proof on our work page.

Why does AI cite go-to businesses?

AI is more willing to cite clear, precise content backed by sources, figures or quotations. A go-to business naturally produces that kind of content.

A Princeton study on generative engines measured it. Adding sources, quotations and figures can increase a piece of content’s visibility by up to 40%. Conversely, keyword stuffing does worse than changing nothing. AI rewards clarity and proof, not repetition. A business that cites its methods, its verifiable figures and its customers’ real feedback therefore has a natural advantage. It has nothing to invent. It just needs to write it down.

What we have seen

After redesigning certain pages, our clients’ articles and websites were cited by AI. We had clarified the pages, added complete structured data and rewritten the title tags and meta descriptions. We don’t know which lever mattered most. But the clarity of the message was at the heart of every redesign. We explain this in our guide to GEO explained.

The mistakes that make you interchangeable

Some habits erase what makes you unique. Here are the ones we see most often:

  • talking about yourself instead of your customer’s problem
  • using empty words like “excellence”, “passion” or “tailored” without proving anything
  • copying competitors down to their sentences, hoping to imitate them
  • hiding your proof or showing none at all
  • saying different things on your website, your profile and your social media.

What consistency changes

A reference says the same thing everywhere. Same name, same trade, same promise, on the website, the Google profile, social media and directories. This consistency reassures customers. It also helps Google and AI understand you.

Google takes prominence into account in its local ranking: reviews, mentions, presence on the web. A business whose message changes from place to place blurs that signal. A consistent business strengthens it with every mention.

Consistency doesn’t require big resources. It requires rigor. Reread your profile, your website and your social media. Ask yourself whether they tell the same story. If they don’t, start there.
