The essentials in 30 seconds

  • A Google Business Profile with no calls almost always has a precise cause: category, area, information, photos or reviews.
  • Google ranks profiles on three criteria: relevance, distance and prominence.
  • Your profile must be complete, accurate and consistent with your website. Every empty field costs you customers.
  • Customers decide fast: 75% choose a business in under 30 minutes.
  • Measure your calls in the Performance tab of your profile, then fix one cause at a time.
  • 75%of consumers choose a business in under 30 minutesBrightLocal, 2026
  • 28%even decide in under 5 minutesBrightLocal, 2026
  • 91%of people in France own a smartphone, and often call straight from the profileArcep, Digital Barometer 2026

If your Google Business Profile doesn’t bring in calls, the cause almost always lies in one of three criteria: relevance, distance or prominence. Google itself gives them in its help page on local ranking. A badly categorised, incomplete profile, or one with no recent reviews, loses on at least one of the three, and the calls go to the business next door.

The Google My Business listing is now called Google Business Profile. The name has changed, but its role is as central as ever. For many tradespeople and local professionals, it is the first source of calls, ahead of the website. Here are the causes we come across most often, and how to fix each one.

Why doesn’t your Google Business Profile bring in calls?

Your profile doesn’t bring in calls either because it doesn’t appear to the right customers, or because it doesn’t make them want to call. So you need to check two things: visibility, then conversion.

Visibility is the number of times your profile is shown on Google and Google Maps. Conversion is the share of those views that turns into a call, a directions request or a website visit. A profile can be seen a lot and called very little. Another can be convincing, but almost never seen.

Google’s three criteria

Google explains that its local ranking rests on three criteria:

  • relevance does your profile match what the customer is looking for?
  • distance are you close to the customer or to the area searched?
  • prominence are you known, mentioned, well rated, online and offline?

Google also states that you cannot pay to improve your local ranking. Everything therefore depends on the quality of the profile and on your reputation.

What are the most common causes?

The most common causes are the wrong category, an incomplete profile, a vague service area and too few reviews. We find them in almost all our audits. Here are the eight we fix most often, from the most important to the simplest.

Cause no. 1: the wrong primary category

The primary category is the most important setting on your profile. It tells Google what your trade is. Get it wrong, and you don’t appear on the searches that matter.

We often see categories that are too broad. A roofer listed as “Construction company”. A hypnotherapist listed as “Wellness center”. Google then shows them for vague searches. But not for “roofer” or “hypnosis to quit smoking”. Choose the most precise category possible, then add secondary categories for your other services.

Cause no. 2: incomplete information

An incomplete profile is a less relevant profile. Google recommends filling in all the information: address or area, opening hours, phone, website, services, description. Every empty field reduces your chances of appearing.

Google also stresses this in its advice on showing business details in its results. The more precise your data, the easier it is to display, in search and in AI answers.

The fields most often forgotten

  • the list of services with a short description for each one
  • special opening hours for bank holidays and time off
  • attributes such as “free quote”, “home visits” or “online appointments”
  • the opening date and the business description.

Cause no. 3: a vague service area

If you travel to your customers, your service area must be clear. Otherwise, Google doesn’t know where to show you.

Google’s guidelines for representing your business are precise. If you don’t receive customers at your address, you must hide it and set a service area. Keep that area realistic. An area that is too large doesn’t help. Google remains attached to real distance.

Cause no. 4: a tampered business name

Some people add keywords to their profile name, such as “Smith Plumbing Emergency 24h Paris Cheap”. This is banned. The name must be the one you use in real life, on your sign, your invoices and your website.

This practice may seem to work for a few weeks. Then a competitor reports it, or Google spots it, and the profile is suspended. We have seen businesses lose all their calls overnight because of it. It’s not worth the risk.

Cause no. 5: few reviews, or old reviews

Reviews affect prominence, and the desire to call. A profile with three reviews from 2021 inspires little trust next to one with twenty recent reviews.

Customers mostly look at freshness. According to BrightLocal, 74% of consumers only care about reviews from the last three months. We detail the whole method in our guide to getting Google reviews, without cheating.

And unanswered reviews

A negative review without a reply drives people away. A negative review with a calm, precise reply reassures. Replying to every review shows the business is alive. It is often the detail that makes people call.

Cause no. 6: missing or dull photos

Photos are often the first thing a customer looks at. A profile with no photos, or a single blurry photo of the logo, gives no idea of the work.

Add real, recent photos: your projects, your team at work, your vehicle, your premises. No need for a photographer. A recent smartphone, natural light and sharp images are enough. Refresh them regularly to show the business is still active.

Cause no. 7: a phone number or website that doesn’t match

The number shown must be the right one, reachable during the hours listed. It sounds obvious, but we often find an old landline, a line nobody answers, or a website that shows a different number.

Google asks that the phone number and website on the profile be the business’s official contact details. This information must be identical everywhere: profile, website, directories, social media. An inconsistency creates doubt for Google, for AI and for customers.

The website the profile points to

Many customers click “Website” before calling. If that website is slow, dated or vague, they go back and call the competitor. The profile and the website work together. One doesn’t make up for the other.

Cause no. 8: a profile that is never updated

A profile frozen for years sends a signal of neglect. Wrong hours, old photos, no posts: the customer wonders whether the business still exists.

Post an update, an offer or a recent project from time to time. Update your hours before every holiday period. These small actions take a few minutes a month, and they show that someone looks after the profile.

What we see in our audits

In our audits, a profile with no calls rarely has a single problem. It often has three or four at once. Each one is small. Together, they are costly.

For Bodyguard Paris, for example, we built the first website and checked the Google profile at the same time. One page per level of protection on the website. The same services, the same name and the same number on the profile. The client summed it up like this: “Our reputation has always been solid, but we had nothing to show it online.” That is often the real problem. The work is good. It just isn’t visible.

Should you pay to improve your profile?

No, you cannot pay Google to rank your profile higher. The profile is free, and its organic ranking cannot be bought. Google says so clearly.

There are paid ads on Google Maps. But they are labeled as sponsored, and they stop as soon as you stop paying. Organic ranking, on the other hand, is built with a well-kept profile, real reviews and a consistent website. It is slower. It is also more lasting.

Beware of miracle offers

You may have received a call like “Your Google profile is about to be deleted” or “We’ll put you at the top of Google Maps for 99 euros”. These approaches are very often misleading. Google doesn’t sell positions. And no serious provider can guarantee a ranking.

Good habits every month

An effective profile takes little time, but a bit of regularity. Here is the routine we recommend. It takes less than an hour a month:

  • check your information hours, phone, services, area
  • add two or three recent photos of your jobs or sessions
  • ask for reviews from every satisfied customer, with the direct link
  • reply to every review within the week, good or bad
  • post an update a project, an offer, something new.

These simple actions send a clear message. The business is active. Someone is looking after it. Customers see it, and so does Google.

How do you know how many calls your profile brings in?

You can see it in the Performance tab of your profile. Google shows the number of calls, directions requests and website clicks there, month by month.

Google explains how to read these figures in its help page on profile performance. Look at the trend over several months rather than a single figure. Also note the searches that made your profile appear: they show how your customers really find you.

Why do customers decide so fast?

Customers decide fast because they are often looking for a solution to an immediate problem. They compare two or three profiles, then call the one that inspires the most trust.

A BrightLocal study confirms it: 75% of consumers choose a business in under 30 minutes, and 28% in under 5 minutes. And they mostly do it on mobile. According to the Arcep barometer, 91% of people in France own a smartphone. The “Call” button is just a thumb away.

Your profile has a few seconds to convince. Rating, recent reviews, photos, opening hours, call button: everything must be clear at first glance.

Our method for optimizing your profile

At Monsieur Click, Google profile optimization is part of our review management service and our local SEO work. We treat the profile as a real acquisition channel, not a formality.

Step 1: the profile audit

We go through your profile with a fine-tooth comb: categories, area, name, information, photos, reviews, replies, consistency with your website and directories. We also compare it with the profiles that appear ahead of you.

Step 2: the fixes

We fix everything that holds you back, in order of impact. A precise category, detailed services, a realistic area, real photos, contact details aligned everywhere. Then we set up a simple system to get regular reviews.

Step 3: monthly follow-up

Every month, you receive a clear report: Google Maps rankings, calls, directions, clicks, new reviews. No one can guarantee a ranking. But we work on every lever that depends on you.
