The essentials in 30 seconds
- To show up on Google, your website must be discovered, indexed and judged relevant, and your Google profile must be verified and complete.
- The most common causes are technical (website blocked, not indexed) or editorial (vague pages, no town, no service).
- First check whether Google knows your website, with a site: search or Search Console.
- Google doesn’t sell places in its organic results. SEO often takes several months.
- The plan: unblock, clarify, complete the profile, get reviews, then measure every month.

To show up on Google, your website must be discovered, indexed and then judged useful for the customer’s search. Google explains this in its overview of how Google Search works: it crawls the web, stores pages in its index, then shows the ones that answer best. If your business is invisible, it is almost always stuck at one of these three steps. Or your Google profile isn’t ready.
Being invisible on Google is more common than you’d think. Every week we see skilled businesses that nobody finds online. Here is how to find out where things are stuck, the seven most common reasons, and the plan to get out of it.
Why is your business invisible on Google?
Your business is invisible because Google can’t find your website, doesn’t understand it, or judges it less useful than others for the customer’s search. For the map, you also need a verified, well-filled Google profile.
So there are two worlds to check. The regular results, with links to websites. And Google Maps, with business profiles. You can be visible in one and missing from the other. The causes and the solutions are not quite the same.
Invisible to whom?
Run a first test. Type the exact name of your business into Google. If you don’t even appear, the problem is technical or related to your profile. If you appear for your name, but not for “your trade + your town”, the problem is relevance and competition. These are two very different diagnoses. In the first case, you repair. In the second, you build. Knowing which situation you are in stops you spending energy in the wrong place.
How do you check whether Google knows your website?
To check, type “site:” followed by your web address into Google, for example site:mybusiness.com. If no page appears, Google doesn’t know your website.
To go further, Search Console, Google’s free tool, lets you check each page. Its inspection tool tells you whether a page is indexed, and if not, why. It’s the first thing we look at during a diagnostic.
And for Google Maps?
For Google Maps, search for your business name directly in the app. If your profile doesn’t appear, it doesn’t exist, isn’t verified or has been suspended. If it appears for your name, but not for “your trade near me”, it lacks relevance or prominence. Also open your management dashboard: Google flags verification problems and pending edits there.
What are the 7 most common reasons?
The seven most common reasons are a blocked website, a website that is too new or isolated, a missing profile, vague pages, a single page for everything, a slow website and inconsistent information. Here are the details.
Reason no. 1: your website blocks Google
A single setting can prevent Google from crawling or indexing your website. A robots.txt file that is too strict, or a “noindex” tag forgotten after the website was built. Google explains the role of the robots.txt file in its documentation. We find this problem more often than you’d imagine, especially after a rushed launch.
Reason no. 2: your website is too new or isolated
A brand-new website that no other website mentions takes time to be discovered. Google finds pages by following links. If nobody points to you, it finds you more slowly. A Google profile linked to your website, and a few serious directories, speed up discovery. Submitting your website in Search Console also helps Google find it faster.
Reason no. 3: you have no Google profile, or it isn’t verified
Without a verified Google profile, you don’t appear on Google Maps. Yet that’s where many local customers search. Creating a profile is free. Getting it verified takes a little time. Google may ask for a video, a call or a letter to check that the business really exists. Completing it takes care. We detail the pitfalls in our article on the Google profile.
Reason no. 4: your pages don’t speak like your customers
Your customers type “plumber leak Malakoff”. Your website talks about “hydraulic solutions”. Google doesn’t always make the connection. Your pages must use your customers’ words: the name of the trade, the precise service, the town or area. To find them, note the exact phrases your customers use on the phone or in their emails. They are often the same ones they type into Google.
Reason no. 5: a single page for all your services
An “Our services” page that lists everything can’t be the ideal answer to every search. Google prefers a dedicated page for each important service. Its SEO guide recommends organizing the website so each topic is clear.
Reason no. 6: your website is slow or painful on mobile
A slow website, or one that is hard to use on a phone, drives visitors away. It also sends a bad signal to Google. Speed alone isn’t enough to rank well, but a very slow website starts with a handicap. Google publishes simple benchmarks: a page’s main content should appear in under 2.5 seconds. Many older websites, loaded with images that are too heavy, go well past that threshold on mobile.
Reason no. 7: your information is inconsistent
Two addresses, three phone numbers, different opening hours between your website, your profile and directories. Google has doubts, and it prefers to show a business whose information matches. Taking care of your business details helps Google display you correctly.

How long does it take to show up on Google?
It often takes several months to see the effects of real SEO work. Google itself states that an SEO provider generally needs four months to a year to put improvements in place and see the benefits.
Some fixes work faster. Unblocking a blocked website, verifying a profile, correcting a category: the effect can show within a few weeks. But gaining rankings against established competitors takes time, depending on your market. Be wary of anyone who promises results in a week. The right approach is to start with the quick fixes, to gain ground straight away, then carry out the groundwork in parallel. That way you see early effects without giving up on lasting results.
Can you pay to show up on Google?
You can pay for ads, but not for a place in the organic results or on Google Maps. Google doesn’t sell its ranking.
Google Ads appear with the label “Sponsored”. They can make you visible right away, but they stop as soon as the budget stops. Organic ranking, on the other hand, is built over time. Google even states in its help page on local ranking that you can’t pay to rank higher in local results.
How do you show up on Google, step by step?
To show up on Google, follow this order: unblock, get known, clarify, complete the profile, get reviews, then measure. Each step prepares the next.
Step 1: unblock
Check that Google can crawl and index your website. No block in robots.txt, no forgotten noindex tag. Submit your website in Search Console and send it your sitemap.
Step 2: get known
Link your website to your Google profile. Sign up to a few serious directories for your trade and your town. Every mention helps Google discover and locate you.
Step 3: clarify
Create one page per important service. Use your customers’ words, and mention your area. Write clear headings. Explain how you work, with real examples.
Step 4: complete the profile
Choose the most precise category, list your services, give your opening hours and your area, add real photos. The French government portal France Num also stresses the importance of these basics for small businesses.
Step 5: get real reviews
Ask every satisfied customer for a review, with a direct link. Reply to every review. Reviews strengthen your prominence, one of the three criteria for local ranking.
Step 6: measure
Track your rankings, visits, calls and reviews every month. Adjust based on what you observe. SEO isn’t a one-off project. It’s a habit. One well-used hour a month is worth more than a big operation every two years.

What we see in our diagnostics
At Monsieur Click, many businesses come to us with the same sentence: “Nobody finds me.” And often, the cause is simpler than they thought.
Studio La Voix du 12, a recording studio in Montpellier, only had a holding page online. Impossible to be found for “voice-over studio Montpellier” with an empty page. We built its first real website, with audio samples, then worked on its local SEO, its Google profile and its visibility in AI. The first step was simply to exist online, with clear pages.
The causes we find most often
In most of our diagnostics, invisibility comes from a mix of small things. A profile that was never verified. A website that doesn’t mention the town. A home page that talks about “passion” instead of the trade. An old phone number in a directory. None of these mistakes is serious on its own. Together, they make the business almost impossible to find.
When the website itself needs rebuilding, we offer a website build designed from the start to be found. Otherwise, we fix what exists, in order of impact.
The mistakes that delay everything
Some mistakes slow down everything else. Avoid them from the start:
- waiting for Google to come on its own without submitting the website or creating a profile
- copying text from another website Google often ignores duplicate content
- changing your name or address without updating the profile and directories
- creating dozens of empty pages for every town, with no useful content
- giving up after a month because the results aren’t visible yet.
